School Supplies and BYOD
So I’ve got school supplies totally under control here and all (thank goodness!) but I’m kind of wondering about one choice I made. My oldest is in middle school (gr. 6) and they offered the option of regular school supplies (see Option A list below) OR bring your own device, aka BYOD (see Option B list below).
I attended a school – parent meeting in June about the BYOD initiative and left feeling reasonably assured that it was a good option for the school in general and my kid in particular. I also discussed it with other parents and while of course we all have concerns (in my case I am particularly concerned about the safeguards that need to be in place so kids’ computers are treated properly and securely locked when necessary, plus I really think the 6 hour battery life thing is a joke), I personally decided to allow my son to have a computer for school. We went with the suggested, but not required, Chromebook, Samsung version, as it offered good bang for the buck.
Now with just a couple days before school I’m learning a few of my son’s friends are not participating for various reasons. I’m hoping the BYOD initiative is as well accepted as I had originally expected – I really think it offers some interesting aspects to the classroom setting.
Anyone else have a computer or similar device on their school supply list this year? What are your thoughts on the concept?
