Starting Summer

Starting Summer

Oh, such a glorious time of year this is! As much as I enjoy fall and the children going back to school, the start of summer holds equal promise. I have plans galore and happy children and the sun is even ACTUALLY shining, which let me tell you is something it hasn’t been doing much of in our area lately!

I know in two weeks, okay that’s optimistic, in one week, things might already be going off the rails. The boys will be tired of each other, the hours I have to spend working will grate on them, it will be too hot or too rainy and my plans won’t be coming to fruition. I know that, but even knowing how likely all that is…I still hold out hope that this year it will be different. Someone wish me luck, please?!

So do you want to know my plans? You know, find out how I’m planning to wrangle three boys, somehow keep working my 25-30 ish hour weeks (well that’s my estimate of time spent between client work, marketing, etc – I spend a lot more on the computer when you include blogging, facebook, games, etc!) stop eating meals out and truly enjoy the brief Alberta summer? Without feeling like a WAHM fail like I did last summer?

First I have a weekly schedule I intend to follow. In the mornings, when I am busiest with work, the boys have some projects to do. They have to do some reading, some math and each week we will have a science project. Then they get some free time (okay, Minecraft time, I’ll be honest) and hopefully in afternoons we can get in outdoor fun – parks, tennis and bike rides mostly! Once a week we will go to one of the local tracks, plus we’ll have weekly visits to the library and weekly baking days. I’m even planning to theme my weeks somewhat so that the reading and projects can kind of work together. My boys aren’t the biggest fans of reading, so they need a little guidance sometimes!

One of the best things we have planned – one week in July all three boys get to go to rock climbing camp. I was so excited to find a half-day camp that had a program that could accommodate them all – there are 3 years between each – so 6 years between oldest and youngest – and many camps don’t really work well for that. And I’m selfish – I don’t want to send them to camp if they end up going on different weeks or at different times because of their ages. And I didn’t want full-day camps, I value the laid-back and relaxed pace of summer, camp is meant to be a fun addition, not a full day school replacement. Ā Plus I don’t really want to spend a fortune on camp.

Sure looks fun!

In August we’ll head to Idaho for about a week – we’re going to the beach, we’re going to zipline and we’re going to Silverwood – it will be a busy vacation. I’m totally excited for this part of summer. Last year we didn’t really go anywhere, except a beautiful weekend in Revelstoke. I was dumb and ended up with a work project I was finishing half the weekend…in the car, in the hotel room when everyone else was sleeping…basically in all the spare minutes and I came home kind of cranky. I am NOT doing that this year – I’ve given my clients plenty of notice and will enjoy a full week of family time – I will maybe take only my tablet so I am not tempted to spend time on the darn laptop for once. And right after vacation ends I will be heading to Red Deer for Mud Hero. DH’s work schedule changed so he can’t do it with me, but my lovely niece has agreed to take his place and get muddy with me šŸ™‚

Oldest gets one extra week of camp in late August, there is a great half-day soccer camp he attended last year and is going to go to again. Several of his soccer teammates are also going so it should be fun for him and help him get that conditioning back up before we start indoor soccer in the fall – he moves up an age group to U14 then!

Not long after soccer camp and it’s back to school. Well back to school for my older two (grade six and grade four – OMG!) and first year of real school for the baby. Kindergarten a couple of days per week – three days on the “good” weeks, lol. I can’t begin to tell you how exciting that is for me. Actual whole days of peace and quiet – I love that little boy, but oh he can talk, and talk, and then he can talk to you about whatever he told you in the first minute he was talking all.over.again.

Suddenly, I’m feeling very tired thinking about the busy summer ahead. I think I need that beach asap.
