The Return of Coach Laurie
Best thing about fall? Well, the leaves and smells of fall are awesome, but that does not last long here in Alberta. No, the very best thing about fall for me is the return of indoor soccer! Games don’t start until mid-October, but there is plenty to do in preparation for the season. This weekend we had a team-building event for our community teams. This week I should get player lists for my two teams (U8 and U14) and then I’ll have to set up my email lists, make some player lists and laminate them (I give them to the parents so they can cheer more easily), start setting up some practice plans and organize parent meetings. Then I’ll need to pick up my gear bags and uniforms. Plus register the older team for an early season tournament. Oh and maybe I should stock up on some extra whistles, so I can follow the directions of my ENT and yell less while coaching. Lots of work, but so worth it! I really do love having this opportunity to work with kids and I especially love watching the teams gel together over time.
Having said how much I love coaching – can I just yet again show my naiveté by saying I had no idea when I first stepped into coaching (in an outdoor season where there was NO ONE stepping up to coach my son’s then U12 team). Based on the fact I’d seen the Association practically begging for coaches at certain times, I thought it was an ongoing problem. And at certain times and in certain age groups we do still often have trouble getting enough coaches and assistant coaches. But this year for U14 boys we had 4 people who said they wanted to coach (and I know of at least one more who wants to coach and just didn’t put their name forward inadvertently). We only have three teams, so the numbers don’t exactly balance. And while assistant coaches are super important, everyone seems to want to be the Head Coach. Not that I can blame them, I’m the same. I’m happy to share many of the responsibilities, but I like to be in control 🙂 Fortunately for me I did end up as head coach for one team and I’m looking forward to a wonderful season. Soccer mom for the win!
